Each month we donate a portion of our proceeds to a child with medical needs through the Legendairy Littles program. During the month of January 2025, we will be featuring Amethyst.

At 25 weeks gestation, Amethyst’s mom had set up an appointment to see her doctor for what she thought was a UTI. While getting ready for the appointment, she began to feel a strong pain along with bleeding. Quickly, Amethyst was born with purple skin. Her mom cleared her airway and then rubbed Amethyst’s heart. This helped her skin color to change from purple to red. Amethyst’s 7-year old sister called their dad and frantically told him that “the baby’s out” and then she called 911. Mom couldn’t see the baby’s chest moving with breaths, so she performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took over chest compressions. Once at the hospital, doctors worked on Amethyst for an hour and then she was airlifted to another hospital with an equipped NICU. This left Mom behind at the original hospital where she would deliver the placenta and stay overnight for observation.

Amethyst would spend 140 days in the NICU. During this time, she had a level IV brain bleed and underwent surgery to close her PDA. Although Amethyst received fantastic care from a number of doctors and nurses, there were three amazing nurses who her family became close with and were instrumental in Amethyst’s care.

Since graduating from the NICU, Amethyst receives Physical Therapy to help with her left side stiffness. She also receives feeding therapy to encourage her to take a bottle. On November 18, Amethyst’s family was able to meet the EMT crew that helped save Amethyst’s life while her (now) eight-year-old sister received a Life Saving Award and Mom received a Stork Award and Life Saving Award.

Amethyst loves being home with her family. She enjoys the ABC song and the Pikwik Pack show. She is learning to take steps and making noises and bubbles. She enjoys so many different rattles and noise makers, but her favorite is a Puss and Boots rattle.

Amethyst is alive today because of CPR. This skill is so important for everyone to be trained in and have a comfortable understanding of. Her family would like to encourage everyone reading her story to sign up for a CPR class in your community. It is far better to have a skill and never use it than to now know it when it’s needed.

If you would like to donate directly to Amethyst’s family, you can do so through their GoFundMe Account. During the month of January, Legendairy Milk will be making a donation to Amethyst's family to help with his medical expenses.
