Each month we donate a portion of our proceeds to a child with medical needs through the Legendairy Littles program. During the month of June, we will be featuring Emmy. Legendairy Milk is making afinancial contribution to Emmy’s family to assist with her ongoing medical needs.

At just 19 weeks pregnant, doctors discovered that Emmy’s mom had an incompetent cervix which required a rescue cerclage with two stitches to be placed. A rescue cerclage is a surgical procedure where a stitch is placed in the cervix to prevent preterm birth. Following this procedure, her mom was placed on bedrest which required a reassignment at her work as a nurse to accommodate the restrictions. At 31-weeks gestation, the cerclage failed and Emmy’s mom was started on magnesium sulfate to stop labor while also getting two rounds of steroids to help promote Emmy’s lung development. The magnesium had to be stopped when doctors discovered that they were not able to stop labor.

Emmy was immediately taken to the NICU when she was born where she required oxygen, IV fluids, andan NG tube. An NG tube is a feeding tube that goes through the nose and into the stomach. While in theNICU, Emmy’s NG tube was changed for a G-tube. G-tubes are surgically placed in the stomach andbypass the mouth and esophagus. Emmy also required oxygen support until she was discharged fromthe NICU after 97 long days.

On her first night at home, Emmy’s dad discovered she had aspirated on her tube feeding and theambulance had to be called. Thankfully Emmy was able to self recover, although that night was one ofthe scariest for her parents.

At 9-months old, Emmy is meeting the milestones for her adjusted 7-month age. She is excited to try crawling soon and is one of the happiest babies around. She loves to play with plastic water bottles and experiment with how it squishes. She also loves her sloth rattle. Emmy loves to move, whether it’s in her bouncer or on her parents’ laps where she will bounce herself.

Emmy’s parents are thankful to the doctors and nurses at Nemorus Children’s Hospital and theMaternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The medical teams who helped care for Emmy were remarkable and have played an important role in the thriving girl she is now.
