Legendairy Littles: Honoring Our Smallest Fighters During NICU Awareness Month

September is NICU Awareness Month—a time to honor the tiniest warriors, the families who love them fiercely, and the communities that rally around them. At Legendairy Milk, this month is especially close to our hearts because it reminds us of why we created the Legendairy Littles Program back in 2017.

Since then, this program has become one of the most meaningful parts of what we do. Every month, we shine a spotlight on a family navigating the realities of having a medically complex child—and we provide a financial gift to help lighten the load, even just a little. Over the past eight years, we’ve supported more than 96 families (and counting!). Each one has a story that deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

If you’re new here, let’s break it down: what exactly is Legendairy Littles, how did it start, and how can you be part of it?

When Legendairy Milk first launched, our mission was to support moms in their breastfeeding journeys. But it didn’t take long to realize something bigger: so many families in our community were also navigating complex medical challenges with their babies. We wanted to do more than provide lactation support—we wanted to show up in a tangible way.

That’s where Legendairy Littles was born.

Each month, we choose one family raising a baby with medical complexities to receive a monetary donation from Legendairy Milk. The funds come directly from a portion of our proceeds, so when you shop with us, you’re also helping another family. Think of it as mom-to-mom support, amplified.

These donations may cover medical bills, travel for hospital visits, or even just a few meals during long days in the NICU or at specialist appointments. The details may differ, but the heart of the program is the same: to remind families they’re not alone.

Like so many things in motherhood, Legendairy Littles started with a real conversation between two moms.

Our Legendairy Littles program manager, Libby, met Legendairy Milk founder Luna in an exclusive pumping group on Facebook. Both were deep in the trenches of pumping and navigating the challenges of feeding medically complex kiddos. Libby’s son has FPIES, a rare food allergy that affects the GI tract. She spent over two years on a strict elimination diet to pump for him, and Legendairy Milk supplements like Pump Princess helped her build enough milk supply to keep him fed until he turned three.

Through late-night chats and real-talk about the struggles of motherhood, the idea for Legendairy Littles was born. What if we could create a program to raise awareness and support families going through the hardest days of their lives?

Fast-forward to today: what started as a “what if” has turned into a program that’s been running for eight years straight, impacting nearly 100 families across the country.

For Libby, Legendairy Littles isn’t just a program—it’s personal.

“To me, this program is about hope and connection,” she shares. “As a mom, walking through the days of the unknown with a sick kiddo is scary. The financial uncertainty is still chilling. The fear of the unknown and loneliness of trying to figure out what is going on with your perfect baby is an experience unlike anything else. But working with these families each month is a small way to help them know that their story matters. The journey they are on is seen. And they have support from others.”

Over the years, Libby has witnessed how far that support ripples. Families featured in the program inspire others in medical parenting groups who are desperate for hope. Parents who feel isolated find connection in knowing they’re not the only ones navigating these challenges. And former recipients often go on to encourage the next wave of Legendairy Littles families.

“The hard doesn’t go away,” Libby says. “But knowing you have support gives us moms a sense of hope.” That’s what makes this program so special.

Since 2017, Legendairy Littles has:

• Supported 12 families every year (that’s ~96 families total) as of 2025.
  
  

• Helped cover medical costs, meals, and travel expenses for families with children in the NICU or managing complex medical conditions.
  
  

• Shared the stories of babies with a wide range of conditions—from prematurity to rare diagnoses—to raise awareness and visibility.
  
  

• Built a community of parents who recognize themselves in each other’s stories and feel less alone.
  
  

And we’re just getting started.

One of the most important parts of this program is that anyone can nominate a family.

Once submitted, our team reviews nominations and selects one family each month. Their story is then featured on our blog, so our community can rally around them.

Every Legendairy Little has a story worth telling. Some are home, thriving after tough NICU stays. Others are still fighting. Each family reminds us why this program exists: to celebrate courage, provide support, and spread hope.
