Meet August's Legendairy Little, Haven

When Haven was six weeks old, her mom noticed some small bruises on Haven’s body. At the Emergency Department, the medical staff felt that the bruising was not a cause for concern. The bruises were the only physical symptom that something might be wrong. Mother’s intuition pushed Haven’s mom to push medical providers to look into the bruising more. Following her gut instinct saved Haven’s life. By advocating for what she believed was in the best interest of Haven, doctors ran lab work and found that her white count was 1.59 million. Haven’s parents would learn that a normal white count is between 4,000 to 10,000. Doctors initially thought that there had been a lab error, but upon confirmation and further testing, Haven would be diagnosed with Infant Leukemia. 

With her parents by her side, Haven has been fighting Infant Leukemia. There are approximately 150 cases of Infant Leukemia diagnosed in the United States each year. Infant Leukemia is specifically in infants under 12 months of age. The research and medical options are less since this is a very rare condition. Haven required a full blood exchange and she spent 12 days in the Intensive Care Unit. Of those days, nine of them were spent on a ventilator to allow her body to rest and recover. Haven was able to be discharged from the hospital for five days at home before she began her next round of treatments. The next round will require a hospital stay of at least five weeks. 

Haven has such a bright smile and is loved by everyone around her. She loves to watch Bluey and Lyla in the Loop. She loves her “Bun Bun” and watching her Baby Einstein aquarium. Haven loves her family so much, she enjoys dancing with her dad and spending time playing with her siblings.
